Respected Canadian yacht builder, Andy Wiggers of Wiggers Custom Yachts in Bowmanville, Ontario has acquired the molds for the Niagara and Nonsuch line of boats. Operating under licensing agreements with the yachts' designer, Mark Ellis, of Mark Ellis Design Ltd., Wiggers will build boats to order, and plans are currently underway to produce a NONSUCH 33 for delivery in the fall of this year. Harris & Ellis Yachts will represent both lines.
NONSUCH catboats rapidly generated popularity following
their introduction in the late seventies, due to their ease of handling,
excellent sailing performance and roomy accommodations. More than 1,000
boats were produced during the period of 1978 to 1995 despite two interruptions
in production resulting from ownership changes. They are easily recognized
by their innovative rig, featuring a large single sail set on a freestanding
mast and wishbone boom. Although the boats have bcen out of production
for almost two years, owner loyalty remains strong. The International NONSUCH
Association, boasting 600 members, pursues an active agenda of regattas,
seminars and social events.
NIAGARA 35 and NIAGARA 42 sloops appeal to the many sailors who appreciate classic appearance combined with a contemporary fin keel hull form. Recognized as a quality cruising boat, they have maintained a high value and continue to be sought in the used market. Prized for their balance and easy motion in a seaway, many have made successful major ocean passages. Nearly 300 Niagara’s in existence attest to the popularity of these designs.
Wiggers Custom Yachts, established in 1974, is well known for its construction of ocean racing sailboats and light cruising boats. The yard's experience in modern composite construction and its reputation of integrity and detail in finishing continue to bring business from noted designers around the world. Wiggers-built racing yachts have won many prestigious trophies including two Canada's Cups.
Harris & Ellis Yachts Ltd, established in Oakville, Ontario in 1978 was the original dealer for both the NONSUCH and NIAGARA lines. In addition to its brokerage business of used boats, the company will now represent new NONSUCH and NIAGARA sales.
